Photographing home after home on block after block in Toms River -- we came to realize that we weren't photographing hurricane debris - we were photographing lives - people's passions - their personalities.  We were actually making family portraits via their belongings which were out on the streets.  It's as if the houses themselves were sickened by the sea water and had spit out their contents in an attempt to survive.  It was heartbreaking to see and realize that no home was left untouched, and it was hard to grasp that what we were seeing were the houses turned virtually inside out - this was the sum total of someone's life, work and passion - now lying naked on the street in total ruin.
